BIOGRAPHY

Chenguang "Edmond" Wang is Trumpet Lecturer at the University of Virginia and  Principal Trumpet of the Charlottesville Symphony Orchestra. He balances a multifaceted career as a performer, educator, and musical collaborator across international stages and academic settings.

Before joining the faculty at UVA, Edmond served as Associate Principal Trumpet (Acting Principal) with the Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra and continues as Guest Principal Trumpet with the Macau Orchestra. His orchestral experience includes performances with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra and Michigan Chamber Players. As a chamber musician, he is currently a member of the University of Michigan Faculty Brass Quintet.

Beyond traditional classical settings, Edmond has appeared on China Central Television, recorded for WBAL’s Season to Celebrate holiday program, and contributed to New Year Gala projects for Bilibili, one of China’s largest media platforms with over 100 million daily active users. His commercial and media work includes theme recordings for the internationally acclaimed video game Arknights, as well as promotional themes for the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and the Hangzhou International Music Festival.

A dedicated educator, Edmond holds teaching positions at both the University of Virginia and the University of Michigan’s Department of Music Education. His teaching emphasizes strong fundamentals while cultivating each student’s individual musical voice, with a focus on developing self-awareness and independent artistic growth. His students have gone on to earn placements at prestigious institutions including the Peabody Conservatory, Arizona State University, and the Tianjin Juilliard School.

 

 

In 2018, he founded Shanghai Musika Education and Technology Co., Ltd., which provides consulting services to students pursuing international music education opportunities.

In 2025, Edmond released his debut solo album, Velvet Echoes 绯色回声, now available on all major streaming platforms. The album showcases his artistic versatility through a blend of lyrical interpretation, refined sound, and cross-cultural influences.

Edmond's educational journey includes a Bachelor of Music from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, where he received the Grace Clagett Ranney Prize in Chamber Music; a Master of Music from the University of Georgia; and he is currently completing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Michigan. His primary teachers include Robert Sullivan, Philip Smith, and Josef Burgstaller.

Beyond his primary roles, Edmond maintains an active presence in the broader musical community. He serves as a competition adjudicator, including for the National Trumpet Competition. He also gives masterclasses around the world.

 

Through orchestral performances, chamber music initiatives, educational leadership, and community engagement, Edmond exemplifies a thoughtful approach to musical artistry that bridges Eastern and Western classical traditions while nurturing the next generation of musicians.
